Next Hike:
July 6th: Mullaghanattin (Moll’s Gap).
This is a horseshoe walk around a coom known as the Pocket. There
is an option of doing half the horseshoe by going straight up on
to Mullaghanattin (773m). The full circuit is a moderate walk on
a fine day.

Please note that shorter routes can be organised for people who
are new to hill walking and who feel that they would not like to
take a full route on their first walk. For organisational purposes
the departure time of 9.00 am will apply to all routes. The times
given include plenty of rest stops.

2008 Schedule
January 6th: Cappagh Glen & Beenaunmore.
Nice easy start to the new year with a hike up the spectacular Cappagh
Glen which is south of Lough Guitane, 10km east of Killarney. At
the head of the glen we traverse back to the summit of Beenaunmore
and back down the valley on the east side.
Total Ascent : 450m. Distance: 10km. Time: 4/5 hours. OS Sheet:
79. Grade: Easy.
January 20th: Cnoc an Bhraca & Cruach Mhor (Gap of
Dunloe).
These two peaks are at the eastern end of The Reeks. We start at
Kate Kearney’s Cottage, up the “zig zags” and
then south to Cnoc an Bhraca (731m) where we will make a decision
as to whether we go on to Cruach Mhor (932m).
Total Ascent: 600m/800m. Distance: 8Km/12Km. Time: 5/6 hours. Grade:
Easy / Moderate.
February 3rd: Galtees - Galteemore & Slievecushnabinnea.
Up the north side of the Galtees from The Glen of Aherlow. Not much
to be said about The Galtees except that they exist and supposedly
have to be climbed sometime. We may find an excuse not to go there
and go west again.
Total Ascent: 800m. Distance: 8km. Time: 4/5 hours. Grade: Easy.
February 17th: The Paps.
The Paps are the Mammerial Mountains; one sees as one crosses the
county bounds into Kerry. A lovely grassy, heathery hike. Not at
all strenuous and a good introductory climb.
Total Ascent: 600m. Distance: 10km. Time: 4/5 hours. Grade: Easy.
March 2nd: Shehy, Purple & Tomies.
We start on the shores of Lough Leane. Up through the woods wherein
lies O’Sullivan’s Cascade. Then up Shehy, across to
Purple Mountain. and then northward over Tomies to Kate Kearney’s
Cottage.
Total Ascent: 800m. Distance: 14km. Time: 6/7 hours. Grade: Moderate.

March 16th: Drung & Been Hill.
These mountains rise straight out of Dingle Bay and give a panoramic
view of the Dingle Peninsula. It is a superb walk with the main
ascent at the start, which is from mountain stage. Once up on Drung,
the rest is an easy ridge walk to Kells Post Office.
Total Ascent: 600m. Distance: 10Km. Time: 5/6 hours. Grade: Easy
/ Moderate. OS Sheet: 78 & 83
April 6th: Caher & Curramore (Western Reeks).
Starting at Lough Acoose we follow the 3rd class road and then the
Kerry way to the Lack Road Col. From there we follow the spur up
to Curramore (822m), across to Caher (1001m) and then back to Lough
Acoose.
Total Ascent: 850m. Distance: 14Km. Time: 6/7 hours. Grade: Moderate.

April 20th: Boughil (Moll’s Gap).
We start at Lough Barfinny, 1.5Km SW of Moll’s Gap. There
is a fairly steep pull 400m up to Boughil (631m). From there it
is a straightforward ridge walk westwards towards Knocklomena. (641m).
There are great views of the southern slopes of the Magillicuddy
Reeks from the ridge.
Total Ascent: 700m. Distance: 10Km. Time: 5/6 hours. Grade: Moderate.

May 3rd / 4th: Blasket & Brandon
Weekend.
Very popular last year with a trip to the Blaskets on the Saturday
with a walk out to the western tip of the island, and a hike up
the west side of Brandon on the Sunday. Accommodation will be provided
in holiday homes in Dingle from Friday until Monday. Please contact

May 18th: Hag’s Glen. Coimin Iochtar, Uachtar &
Beenkeragh.
One of the most spectacular routes in Ireland. The route is up through
the two cooms under the north face of Carrauntoohil. Then up Shea’s
Gully to the start of the Beenkeragh Ridge, across to Beenkeragh
and back down into the Glen.
Total Ascent: 850m. Distance: 12km. Time: 6/7 hours. OS sheet: 78.
Grade: Hard.
June 1st: Torc Mountain.
An introductory hike as part of Cork Pride Week. Further details
will be available on Pride Programme and Cork Pride website.
June 15th: Cumeenapeasta Ridge.
The other spectacular ridge on the eastern end of the Macgilluddy’s
Reeks.
From the Hag’s Glen we ascend to Cruach Mhor and then west
along the arête to the Bone for the descent.
Total Ascent: 1000m. Distance: 13km. Time: 6/7 hours. OS sheet:
78. Grade: Hard.

This year we take a circuit around the Glen itself from Knockmullanane
(593m) around to Dromvalla Mountain (533m).
Total Ascent: 890m. Distance: 12.5Km. Time: 5/6 hours. Grade: Easy.

August 3rd: Inchequin Horseshoe (Beara Peninsula).
This circular route above Inchequin and Clonee Lakes, 10 Km SW of
Kenmare is 18Km long. There are numerous variations that we can
select depending on start time, fitness of group and weather conditions.
Last year we did half the circuit .
Total Ascent: 1500m. Distance: 18Km. Time: 7/8 hrs. Grade: Hard.

August 17th: Circuit of Nire Valley (Comeraghs, Co. Waterford).
Another new one for us. A long but easy circuit taking in Knockanaffrin
(755m) and then all the Spot Heights around to Coumfea.
Total Ascent: 820m. Distance: 17.5Km. Time: 5/6 hours. Grade: Moderate.

September 7th: Barr Tri gCam Horseshoe.
Out on the North side of the Dingle Peninsula. This is a spectacular
walk as the summits give a view of both Dingle & Tralee bays
with Brandon away to the west.
Total Ascent: 850m. Distance: 10km. Time: 6/7hrs. Grade: Moderate.

September 21st: Teermoyle & Beenmore (Glenbeigh).
This is the western half of the Coomasahern Horseshoe. We ascend
Teermoyle (760 m) via Coomreagh and then we work north-westwards
to Been Hill (651m). And thence to Drung (640). A great walk on
a fine day with views south to Caherciveen and west to the Dingle
Peninsula.
Total Ascent: 750m. Distance: 14Km. Time: 6/7 hours. Grade: Moderate.

October 5th: Hungry Hill. (Beara Peninsula).
Hungry Hill (685) is another favourite climb of CGH. It is a rocky
mountain which rises from the coast near Castletownbere. The views
from the summit are spectacular with views over Bantry Bay and westwards
over the Iveragh Peninsula.
Total Ascent: 650m. Distance: 8Km. Time: 5 Hours. Grade: Easy. OS
Sheet: 84.
October 19th: Carrauntoohil via The Heavenly Gates.
This route contours around under the cliffs of the east face of
Carrauntoohil (1039m). We will descend by Shea’s Gully into
the spectacular Coomin Uachtarach. And then back down to The Hag’s
Glen.
Total Ascent: 900m. Distance: 10Km. Time: 5/6 hours. Grade: Moderate
but head for heights needed. OS Sheet: 78.
November 2nd: The Knockmealdowns.
An easy ridge walk from the “V” to Knockmealdown Mountain
& back.
Total Ascent: 450m. Distance: 12km. Time: 4/5 hours. Grade: Easy.
November 16th. Mangerton via Horse’s Glen.
This is an ascent of Mangerton (839m) from the deep valley on its
east side. We follow the main track up Mangerton for 400m and the
cut across to Lough Garragarry. We contour around the side of the
Horses Glen and cut up onto Mangerton North (782m) and then south
to Mangerton itself.
Total Ascent: 700m. Distance: 11Km. Time: 5/6 hours. Grade: Easy
/ Moderate. OS Sheet: 78.

December 21st: Coomshinghaun, The Comeraghs. (Co. Waterford.)
This is the finest example of a Coom in Europe’s offshore
islands. Our route follows the rim of the coom. Total Ascent: 700m.
Distance: 8Km. Time: 4 Hours. Grade: Easy
This climb will be followed by our annual Christmas Party.
