January 7th. The Paps. (Cork/Kerry Border)


January 21st. Knockmealdown Mountains. (Waterford)

February 4th: Crohan Mountain (East of Killarney.)
A gentle ramble above the shores of Lough Guitane, 5 miles east of Killarney.
Total ascent: 630m. Distance: 8Km. Time: 4/5 hours. Grade: Easy. O.S. Sheet: 79

February 18th: Purple & Tomies Mountains. (Gap of Dunloe)
This route starts with a walk up to the Head of the Gap of Dunloe from where we climb up to Purple Mountain (832m) and walk back along the ridge to Tomies Mountain (735m) finishing at Kate Kearney’s Cottage. This route gives fine views over the Lakes of Killarney. O.S. Sheet 78
There are plenty of shorter routes for beginners on this climb.

March 4th: Beenkeragh & Knockbinnea Mountains. (Hag’s Glen. The Reeks.)
This route starts in the Hag’s Glen in the Magillicuddy Reeks. We walk up the Glen towards Carrauntoohill and turn left up on to Beenkeragh (1010m) a summit which gives superb views of the main ridges of the Reeks. We return to the car park via Knockbinnea (854 m). The route can be made shorter by going directly to Knockbinnea which is an easy climb. O.S. Sheet: 78

March 18th: Drung & Been Hill. (Glenbeigh)
These mountains rise straight out of Dingle Bay and give a panoramic view of the Dingle Peninsula. It is a superb walk with the main ascent at the start, which is from mountain stage. Once up on Drung, the rest is an easy ridge walk to Kells Post Office. O.S. Sheet: 78 & 83
Total Ascent: 600m. Distance: 10Km. Time: 5/6 hours. Grade: Easy / Moderate.

April 1st: Caha Mountain Horseshoe. (South of Kenmare)
This is one we haven’t done before. The first peak on the route is Sliabh Bharr Iarthach (489m) then on to Cnoc an Ceachan (608m) and the last peak is cnoc na gCorrmhiolta.. (507m). O.S. Sheet 85
Total Ascent 600m. Distance: 9Km. Time: 4/5 hours. Grade: Easy.


April 15th: Caher & Curramore (Western Reeks)
Another route that we haven’t done before. Starting at Lough Acoose we follow the 3rd class road and then the Kerry way to the Lack Road Col. From there we follow the spur up to Curramore (822m), across to Caher (1001m) and then back to Lough Acoose. O.S. Sheet: 78
Total Ascent:850m. Distance. 14Km. Grade: Moderate.

May 6th/7th: Mount Brandon (Dingle Peninsula) - May Bank Holiday weekend away
As this is a Bank Holiday, some of the group plan to make a weekend of it. We will be staying in The Mount Brandon Hostel in Cloghane. Others will be coming down for a Day climb. Please contact Paul Sheehan if you are interested in booking a place so that we can plan bookings and travel arrangements etc.
Hopefully we will be able to do the ridge from Mt. Brandon across to Gearhane on one of the days. We also plan to visit the amazing Sauce creek and Mastiompan. All depends on the weather of course but we’ve had luck on our last two visits.

May 20th: Boughil. (Moll’s Gap)
We start at Lough Barfinny, 1.5Km SW of Moll’s Gap. There is a fairly steep pull 400m up to Boughil (631m). From there it is a straightforward ridge walk westwards towards Knocklomena. (641m). There are great views of the southern slopes of the Magillicuddy Reeks from the ridge. O.S. Sheet: 78.
Total Ascent: 700m. Distance: 10Km. Grade: Moderate.


June 3rd: Mullaghanattin. (Moll’s Gap)

This is a horseshoe walk around a coom known as the Pocket. There is an option of doing half the horseshoe by going straight up on to Mullaghanattin (773m). The full circuit is a moderate walk on a fine day. O.S. Sheet: 78.

June 17th: Cummeengeera Horseshoe (Beara Peninsula)
Another new one for us. It’s a circuit around the famous Rabhach’s Glen at Lauragh, SW of Kenmare. It takes in Tooth Mt. (590m), Eskatarriff (600m), and Lackabane (602m) O.S. Sheet: 83.
Total Ascent:760m. Distance: 14Km. Time: 5/6 hours. Grade: Easy/ Moderate.


July 1st: Coomloughra Horseshoe. (The Reeks)
Described as one of the finest ridge walks in Europe’s offshore islands. It takes in Caher (1001m), Carrauntoohil (1039m) and Beenkeragh (1010m)., With the hair-raising Beenkeragh Ridge to add a bit of spice to the occasion!
Depending on level of fitness and head for heights this can be classed as moderate or hard. Shorter options will be available. O.S. Sheet: 78
Total Ascent: (1,150m). Distance: 12.5Km. 7/8hrs. Grade: Moderate / Hard.


July 15th: Mullaghanattin. (Moll’s Gap)
This is a horseshoe walk around a coom known as the Pocket. There is an option of doing half the horseshoe by going straight up on to Mullaghanattin (773m). The full circuit is a moderate walk on a fine day. O.S. Sheet: 78.

August 5th: Anascaul Glen. (Dingle Peninsula)
This year we take a circuit around the Glen itself from Knockmullanane (593m) around to Dromvalla Mountain (533m). O.S. Sheet: 70.
Total Ascent: 890m. Distance: 12.5Km. Time: 5/6 hours. Grade: Easy.


August 19th: Circuit of Nire Valley. (Comeraghs, Co. Waterford)

Another new one for us. A long but easy circuit taking in Knockanaffrin (755m) and then all the Spot Heights around to Coumfea. O.S. Sheet: 82
Total Ascent: 820m. Distance: 17.5Km. Time: 5/6 hours. Grade: Moderate.


September 2nd: Teermoyle & Beenmore. (Glenbeigh)
This is the western half of the Coomasahern Horseshoe. We ascend Teermoyle (760 m) via Coomreagh and then we work north-westwards to Been Hill (651m). And thence to Drung (640). A great walk on a fine day with views south to Caherciveen and west to the Dingle Peninsula. O.S. Sheet: 78 & 83
Total Ascent: 750m. Distance: 14Km. Time: 6hrs. Grade: Moderate.


September 16th: Carrauntoohil via The Heavenly Gates.
This route contours around under the cliffs of the east face of Carrauntoohil (1039m). We will descend by Shea’s Gully into the spectacular Coomin Uachtarach. And then back down to The Hag’s Glen. O.S. Sheet: 78.
Total Ascent: 900m. Distance: 10Km. Time: 5 / 6 hrs. Grade: Moderate but head for heights needed.


October 7th: Inchequin Horseshoe (Beara Peninsula)

This circular route above Inchequin and Clonee Lakes, 10 Km SW of Kenmare is 18Km long. There are numerous variations that we can select depending on start time, fitness of group and weather conditions. Last year we did half the circuit . O.S. Sheet: 84 & 85
Total Ascent: 800m. Distance: 18Km. Time: 7 / 8 hrs. Grade: Hard.


October 21st: Mangerton via Horse’s Glen. (Killarney)

This is an ascent of Mangerton (839m) from the deep valley on its east side. We follow the main track up Mangerton for 400m and the cut across to Lough Garragarry. We contour around the side of the Horses Glen and cut up onto Mangerton North (782m) and then south to Mangerton itself. O.S. Sheet: 78.
Total Ascent: 700m. Distance: 11Km. Time: 5/6 hrs. Grade: Easy / Moderate.


November 4th: Hungry Hill. (Beara Peninsula)
Hungry Hill (685) is another favourite climb of CGH. It is a rocky mountain which rises from the coast near Castletownbere. The views from the summit are spectacular with views over Bantry Bay and westwards over the Iveragh Peninsula. O.S. Sheet: 84
Total Ascent: 650m. Distance: 8Km. Time: 5 Hours. Grade: Easy.


November 18th: Cnoc an Bhraca & Cruach Mhor (Gap of Dunloe)
These two peaks are at the eastern end of The Reeks. We start at Kate Kearney’s Cottage, up the “zig zags” and then south to Cnoc an Bhraca (731m) where we will make a decision as to whether we go on to Cruach Mhor (932m).
Total Ascent: 600m/800m. Distance: 8Km/12Km. Grade: Easy / Moderate.

December 2nd: Galtees Circuit of Black Rock Valley. (Co. Tipperary).
This circuit takes in Knockateerriff (692m), Lyreacappul (825m) and Carrigabinnea (822m).
Total Ascent: 700m. Distance: 10Km. Time: 5 / 6 hrs. Grade: Easy going.


December 16th: Coomshinghaun, The Comeraghs. (Co. Waterford.)
This is the finest example of a Coom in Europe’s offshore islands. Our route follows the rim of the coom. Total Ascent: 700m. Distance: 8Km. Time: 4 Hours. Grade: Easy

This climb will be followed by our annual Christmas Party which will be hosted by Fearghal in Dungarvan.
