2006 Schedule
Sun. 1st Jan: The Paps. 690 & 694 m.
Da Chioch Dannann. The Two Breasts of Dana, immediately obvious
when you cross over the boundary between Cork & Kerry. This is a
very easy climb, ideal for beginners.
Distance: 8 Km. Ascent 550m. Time: 5 / 6 hrs. OS Sheet 79.
Sun. 15th Jan: Knockmealdowns: East of Fermoy and Mitchelstown.
Easy ridge walk from The Vee to Knockmealdown Mt. ( 794m ) Good
introductory walk.
Distance: 10 Km. Time: 5 hours. O.S. Sheet 82
Sun. 5th Feb: The Buachill Ridge
Starting at Loch Barfinny V848768, 1.5 Km southwest of Moll's Gap.
There is a steep climb of 400m up to Boughil Summit 631 OD. From
there it is a straight-forward ridge walk westward towards Knocklomena.
641 OD. If conditions are good we will probably do the full ridge
which would be a total distance of 6Km and a total ascent of 850m.
From this ridge there are great views towards the southern slopes
of The Magillicuddy Reeks.
Time 5 / 6 Hours. OS Sheet 78
Sun 19th Feb: Cnoc na Toinne.(958m).
Our first foray into the Hags Glen in the Magillicuddy Reeks this
year. Start Point 836 874. OS Sheet 78. We walk up the western
side of the glen. Then we head up a steep gradient to the "Heavenly
Gates" a gully which brings us on to a track which contours around
the eastern slopes of Carrauntoohil. This brings us out at the top
of "The Devil's Ladder”. From there we head east along the eastern
ridge of the Reeks over Cnoc na Toinne and on to "The Bone" which
we descend to bring us back to the valley floor. A goodly stretch
but well within the abilities of any reasonably fit person. Total
Ascent: 92m. Distance: 10Km. Time: 6/7hours.
March 5th: The Barraduff Horseshoe
A little-visited and easy climb at the head of the Beara Peninsula.
It runs from Mucksna Mt (356m) over Barraduff (400) and on to Knockeirka
(426). Start Point: 926 679. It provides good views over Kenmare
and the upper part of the Bay. The ascent is easy and totals 450m.
Distance is 7Km over boggy ground. This is an ideal climb for beginners.
Time: 4/5 hours. OS Sheet: 85.
March 19th: Hungry Hill.(685m)
This is a popular climb with the regular members of CGH. Hungry
Hill is a rocky mountain rising from the coastal plain between Adrigole
and Castletownbere. The rocky surface gives some very enjoyable
easy scrambling on the way up. The views from the summit are spectacular,
with the whole sweep of Bantry Bay on one side and Kenmare Bay on
the other. Start Point: Ross Mhic Eoghain.
735 471. OS Sheet: 84. Total Ascent: 650m.
Distance: 10Km. Time: 5/6hours.
April 2nd: Purple Mt, 832m; Tomies Mt. 735m; Shehy Mt.
632m.
OS Sheet 78. There a number of routes on to the summits of these
three mountains. While there is a fairly steep pull up the summits
of any of these mountains with an ascent of 600 - 700m, it is well
worth for the easy stroll along the ridge connecting the peaks which
gives great views over the Lakes of Killarney.
Distance 12Km. Time: 5/6 Hours
April 16th: Galtee Mountains.
This is the Easter weekend when Dublin's Lesbian & Gay Hiking Group,
"Out & About" come to Tig Roy's in Galbally. Some of our members
join them for the weekend. The will also be a day climb, meeting
as usual at The Kino, where we will join up with the weekenders
for a hike in the Galtee Mountains.
Details of the climb will be announced on the day but will be around
our normal height, Distance and duration.
May 7th: Barr Tri gCam Horseshoe.
Into the Slieve Mish Range in the Dingle Peninsula for this one.
The long drive is worth it for this superb ridge walk with dingle
Bay to the south and Tralee Bay to the north. On a clear day you
can see for ever! (Well Kerry Head and Loop Head anyway and Mt.
Brandon away to the west). Start Point is 741 111 on the N86. A
steep pull up a heathery slope brings us to Gearhane (792). Once
on Gearhane the walking is easy and we take in the peaks of Caherconree
( 835m ), Barr Tri gCam (851m) and Scrag ( 657m) and thence back
to our starting point.
OS Sheet: 71. Total Ascent: 1000m. Distance: 12 Km. Time: 7/8 hours.
May 21st: Mt. Brandon (952m).
This will be an optional Day/ Weekend trip. There are so many great
routes in this area that it is a shame to go all the way for just
one days climbing. Those who are doing the weekend will stay in
The Brandon Hostel in Cloghane, details of this will be posted nearer
to the date. Suffice it to say that Brandon itself will be climbed
as part of the weekend! and hopefully we will get to see the amazing
Sauce Creek as well. You haven't lived, dear.......... OS Sheet:

June 3rd - 5th: It's the June Bank Holiday Weekend and
it’s the turn of The CGH to host a weekend.
We will be based in the Holiday Cottages at Rossbeigh Beach, Glenbeigh,
Co. Kerry. While we hope we will have a good turnout for the full
weekend, members can of course come for any of the individual day
climbs. A variety of High, Medium and Low walks will be available.
The actual programme will very much depend on the weather but we
hope to do the following:
Carrauntoohill (1039m) via The Eagle's Nest and Shea's Gully, then
across The Beenkeragh Ridge (bring a change of underwear!) to Beenkeragh
(1010m), then northeast to Knockbrinnea (847m).
The western half of the Coomasaharn Horseshoe south of Glenbeigh.
Access the ridge by Coom Arete. The ridge is an easy walk westward
towards to Drung (640m), taking in Teermoyle (760), Mullaghnarakill
(635), Been Hill (651 ) and Beenmore (630). There aren't large descents
and ascents between these peaks. Lower routes such as Seefin (493)
and Rossbeigh Hill (274m) will also be options as well as part of
The Kerry Way or indeed the 4Km walk out to the end of Rossbeigh
Beach. Whatever route you choose a mighty weekend for all is in
the offing. For details of costs, deposits etc, check with one of
the CGH committee. OS Sheets: 78 & 83.
June 18th: Beenoskee (826m).
Another popular climb last year and well worth the long drive to
Anascaul in The Dingle Peninsula. We start from L.Anascaul . The
route follows a track to the head of the valley. From there we head
to Binn an Tuair (526m) and then on to Beenoskee and back down the
valley. A pleasant summer's romp with the prospect of a swim afterwards!
Where would you be going! OS Sheet 70. Total Ascent: 800m. Total
Distance: 10Km. Time: 6/7 hours.
July 2nd: The Mullaghanattin Horseshoe.
Another new one for us. Mullaghattin marks the start of a ridge
that runs all the way to Derrynane. But don't panic dears. We're
only doing the first bit of it! Mullaghanattin (773m) has a distinctive
pyramid shape and is located just south of the Ballaghbeama Gap.
Once on Mullaghanattin the rest of the walk is very easy with little
loss of height between peaks. OS Sheet: 78. Total Ascent: 700m.
Distance: 7Km. Time: 5/6 hours.
July 16th: Cruach Mhor & The Cummeenapeasta Ridge.
The only ridge on the Magillicuddy Reeks which we haven't tackled
to date. Similar to the Beenkeeragh Ridge but nearly twice as long,
it involves scrambling across a narrow ridge. The climb up to Cruach
Mhor is steep. Well within the capabilities of anyone who has climbed
with us to date. We will decide on the actual route to take on the
day.
Start Point 836 674. OS Sheet: 78. Total Ascent: 950m. Distance:
10 Km. Time: 7/8 hours.
August 6th: The Black Valley.
As the more popular spots will be 'black' with people (is this politically
correct?) we've decided to head for the Black Valley and explore
its southern slopes. These are not very high, the highest point
being 506m. The climbs up and down are steep enough. If it’s a good
day the views across to the Reeks are superb.
OS Sheet: 78. Total Ascent: 600m. Distance: 10Km. Time: 5/6 hours.
August 20th: Curraghamore (822m) and Caher (1001m).
Curraghmore is probably one of the least climbed peaks of the Magillicuddy
Reeks as it is off the main ridge. Starting at Lough Acoose we follow
the track beside the lake until it links up with the Kerry Way.
Following this south to the col we then follow the spur up to Curramore
and then on to Caher. The more fit among us may then take a quick
whip (behave yourselves girls!) across to Carrauntoohil.
OS Sheet: 78. Start Point 759 859. Total Ascent: 900m. Distance:
12Km. Time: 7/8 hours.
Sept. 3rd: Lough Inchiquin Horseshoe
You'll need good strong leather on your highheels for this one!
While the slopes are easy the Distance is long. We're back to the
Beara Peninsula for one of the longest horseshoe walks in the country
around the edge of the beautiful Inchiquin Valley south west of
Kenmare.
Start Point: 831 639. OS Sheet: 84 & 85 Total Ascent: 800m. Distance:
18Km. Time: 8/9hours
Sept. 17th: Coomasaharan Ridge.
Back to Glenbeigh again. The climb is only an excuse so that we
can have an autumnal swim in the glorious Rossbeigh Beach. The portion
of the ridge we do will depend on the weather conditions.
October 1st: Shehy (635m) and Tomies (735m).
This climb starts with a lovely walk-in through the woods around
Sullivan's Cascade. There is a steepish climb up a heathery slop
on the Shehy, then an easy ridge walk over to Tomies. Great views
over the Lakes of Killarney and the Gap of Dunloe.
OS Sheet: 78. Total Ascent: 700m. Distance:10Km. Time: 5/6 hours.
October 15th: Mangerton (839m) via The Horses Glen.
Parking at the start of the track, we follow it up for about 400m
and then cut off eastward towards to Lough Garragarry. Then we contour
around the side of the Horses glen up on To Mangerton North Peak
and then south to the main summit. OS Sheet: 78. Start Point: 984
847. Total Ascent: 750m. Distance: 11 Km. Time 5/6 hours.
November 5th: The Galtees. Western Ridge. Lyracappal (825m)
to Slievecushnabinnea (766m).
We suppose it’s safe to go back to the Galtees again. The locals
will have forgotten us. Anyway we can blame the Dubs! Our favourite
route in the Galtees! Up Pigeon rock Glen on to Lyreacappal. Then
an easy walk across to Slievecusnabinnea and maybe Galteemore if
the day is good. Then back down the Blackrock Valley.
Start Point: 857 203. Total Ascent: 600m. Distance: 12Km. Time:
5/6 hours.
November 19th: Crohane (630m)
A gentle ramble above the shores of L. Guitane for a short November
Day...and hence the short description.
OS Sheet: 79. Total Ascent: 600m. Distance: 6Km. Time: 4/5 hours.
December 3rd. Caherbarna:(681m)
Another first for CGH. This ridge is to the east of the Paps and
again is an ideal winter climb. We follow the way-marked route
at the base of the mountains until it is time to head up on to Glenaphrane
(668m) then east along the ridge to Kippagh and back to the road.
Total Ascent: 550m. Distance: 8Km. Time: 4/5hrs. OS Sheet: 79.
December 17th: The Comeraghs
Traditionally we go to either Cooshingaun or Mahon Falls and then
on to our Christmas Party. This year the christmas get together
will be held in Pauls in Cloyne, East Cork after the walk.
