April 2nd: Purple, Shehy and Tomies Mountain :

Finally we get to Purple having postponed it twice; once because of bad weather when we couldn't be bothered going beyond Mangerton, and the second time because there was snow on the Reeks. The forecast was for blustery winds and heavy showers.

A small group today. Mick was busy at the Labour Party Conference; in fact he's been busy at all the party conferences this year....except the Greens whom he believes don't wash often enough. Three were missing because they had got lucky at The Other Place on Saturday night. Eibhear was off in Rome again. He goes so often these days, we are worried in case he has had a Pauline conversion. Or maybe its just a Giovanni conversion.

Starting at Kate Kearneys we went up to the Head of the Gap and then onto the southern flank of Purple Mountain. We only had two very heavy showers but when we got to the the top there was a stiff breeze. The wind got me thinking of the various ways we describe winds in Kerry which is an adaption of The Beaufort Scale. There is a gentle breeze, a bit of a breeze, a fresh breeze, a stiff breeze, a bit of a gale and a fierce feckin' gale man. The latter is the one where climbers are hunched behind a rock, trying to eat their lunch dressed in numerous layers, a sheep farmer strolls by in shirt sleeves with the salutation, " A bit breezy today men "

All the above waffle is really due to the fact that there is not really that much to say except from Purple we took a sciord over to Shehy and then back to Tomies from whence we descended to Kate Kearney's.
